Fern Britton has admitted she takes a small dose of antidepressants every day

Fern Britton says she understands why people commit suicide and even thinks it's brave.

The former This Morning host admits she has battled depression herself and even tried to take her own life at 25.

'I wasn't brave enough to finish the job. Thank God,' says Fern, now 53.

'It's a terrible thing and when I hear about people that have taken ther own lives, I actually think, "How very, very brave".'

Mum-of-four Fern, 53, also realises why those left behind can view suicide as a selfish act.

'I don't say it's admirable but I understand it,' she tells the Radio Times.

'When you are in the pit it's very, very hard.

'That half-sane part of you is saying, "I have so much to look forward to, so much to be thankful for" - but you don't feel any of it because you have so little impact that you may as well vanish.'

The TV personality's new chat show Fern kicks off at teatime on Channel 4 on Monday.
