Weird Al Yankovic added his classic touch to Lady Gaga's hit single, "Born This Way," poking fun at the eccentric singer's sense of style - like meat dresses and giant eggs - in his parody, titled "Perform This Way."
But according to a post titled "The Gaga Saga" on Weird Al's blog this morning, Lady Gaga refused to approve the song for release after hearing the final cut.
The comedian explained how he always asks artists for their blessing before putting a parody of their song on one of his albums, but that in this case things were a little different. He wrote that Lady Gaga's manager said she not only wanted to read the finished lyrics for the song, but she wanted to actually hear it before signing off on it.
"Well, this was mystifying to me," he writes. "At this point she has the lyrics? and hopefully she is familiar with her own song? and the parody is basically her music? with my lyrics. It really shouldn't be that hard to decide ? based on having the lyrics right in front of you ? whether or not you'd be "okay" with a parody. But, alas, we'd been given an ultimatum. If she didn't hear it, she wouldn't approve it."
So Weird Al had to literally scramble to get the track recorded because he never records anything until an artist give him the go-ahead. He even cut a family vacation short to spend time in the studio after receiving word that she actually wanted to hear the song.
But alas, once the finished product was sent to Lady Gaga for her approval, word came back that she said, "no."
"I still don't know specifically what kind of problem she has with the song (obviously I take a few jabs at her, but y'know, it's satire ? that's how it's supposed to work)," Al writes.
But fortunately for all of us, all was not lost, for the magic of YouTube and weirdal.com will let the music live on: Weird Al plans on making free mp3 downloads of the song available on his website, and he posted the audio track for the song on YouTube earlier today as well. He had planned on donating proceeds from an official release and subsequent video ("It was going to be BEYOND AWESOME, and disturbing on many levels," he says) to the HRC (Human Rights Campaign), a cause for which Gaga is a strong supporter.
But wait - now TMZ.com is reporting that sources close to Lady Gaga are saying that she was "in no way trying" to block the song's release and that she hasn't even heard it yet.
"Her manager hasn't had a chance to play it for her yet. She's a huge Weird Al fan," the source told TMZ.
We're not sure how this story is going to end though - whether it will make it onto Weird Al's next album or if it's too late, and whether or not Lady Gaga will ultimately endorse the track. We do know one thing though - maybe it's time for her to find a new manager.
