LA County sheriff's deputy injured in crash on 405 freeway in Long Beach

LONG BEACH - A Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy in a patrol car was injured when the vehicle he was driving crashed into a disabled car on the northbound San Diego (405) Freeway in Long Beach, authorities said today.

The crash of the 2007 Ford Crown Victoria and a 1998 BMW 525i sedan happened at about 11:20 p.m. Wednesday south of Walnut Avenue, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The BMW had hit the center divider and had stopped in the carpool and the no. 1 lanes, the CHP reported.

The deputy "was driving his patrol vehicle northbound on I-405 ... in the (carpool) lane (and) was unable to avoid a collision with (the BMW), which was blacked out and blocking lanes," the CHP reported.

The deputy, who works out of the sheriff's Carson Station, was taken to a hospital for treatment, sheriff's Sgt. Jeff Fleming of the Carson Station said. The 35-year-old man suffered "moderate" injuries, the CHP reported.

The other driver, a 25-year-old Long Beach man, was unhurt, the CHP reported. Several lanes were blocked while an investigation was conducted.
