Charlie Sheen may think he's "winning" -- but at the moment, he seems to be losing the custody fight against estranged wife Brooke Mueller. On Tuesday night, Mueller summoned police to Sheen's home to remove their twin 23-month-old sons, Bob and Max. Early on Wednesday morning, Sheen, 45, appeared on the Today show to air his side of the story. Watch the interview below:
The police action occurred after 20/20 aired a behind-the-scenes look at Sheen's home, including an interview with the two young live-in girlfriends ("the goddesses") who are helping to care for the twins. Prior to taking back her sons, Mueller, 33, filed a restraining order against Sheen, saying in a statement that she was "very concerned that he is currently insane" and "in great fear that he will find me and attack me," as well fearing for her Bob and Max's safety. But Sheen says he never threatened Mueller, and that the children are safer with him than her.
"I invite anybody at this point to come in and just observe — a court-appointed monitor, somebody from her legal team, whether it’s her, or it’s you with a camera," Sheen said on Today. "There’s nothing to hide -- there’s nothing but love or compassion. It’s 100,000 times better than what’s going to be offered in her house."
Mueller has also accused Sheen of knocking her out and once sending an anti-Semitic text message referring to his manager Mark Burg as a "stoopid Jew pig."
In a statement released to People, Sheen insists: "I would never, ever say that about my dear friend Mark. (Mueller) is trying to create discord. I caught her on my phone a year ago texting. She was trying to cause discord among my immediate family. I caught her red-handed and she confessed." He adds: "This is no different. Natty and Rachel (aka "the goddesses") observed her on several occasions (recently) with my unlocked phone that I should never have left out."
Mueller also claims that Sheen threatened her on Tuesday night by saying: "I will cut off your head, put it in a box and send it to your mom." Sheen calls all of Mueller's accusations a "friggin' lie."
"I believe his rage is the result of an intense mental issue, rather than simply a reaction to substance abuse," says Mueller's statement.
However, Mueller also admits that she has "struggled with my own sobriety issues" since her visit to rehab last winter. She says that she used drugs last week with one of Sheen's girlfriends while in the Bahamas, and has now re-entered day treatment.
"I'd like to see her drug tests right now," Sheen said in response. "I'd go head-to-head with her on that."
As for the custody battle, Sheen says he's not giving up. "This is now the challenge I claimed to be looking for," the Two and a Half Men star declared, "and I am more than willing to take on this task."
